Dane Terry impressed with rare intensity and solid songwriting that made for a combination of laughs and intrigue. Sitting alone at a synthesizer piano in a gray v-neck, Terry’s cleverly creepy show featured all original work.

With some masterful lines, such as calling the swirling Milky Way, “the pornography that is our universe,” and eerie suspense, he tantalized the audience.

He started off with musical stories related to a fictional trip to the fictional Pepper Heights, a neighborhood outside of Cleveland. These were so believable that it seemed entirely plausible that this strange suburbia might exist. However, he also added a dash of whimsy to these pieces, which were part of a show being commissioned by PS122. For example, the song “Only One Kind of Night,” re-imagined a late-night interaction between a “Light-keep” and Terry.

The Light-keep asked Terry to choose the color of the new streetlights in song with the memorable chorus lines, “so many kinds of light, but only one kind of night.”

Terry’s singing, sense of suspense, and ability to write interesting musical pieces made it very easy to enjoy his show. At points, he was a little casual; however, this was endearing in many ways and helped balance the suspense, allowing us to laugh. One of his selections, “The Great Ape,” was just that needed balance, describing a comical meeting in space between Earth’s Apex predators and a NASA test monkey. It was a little nonsensical, but also a clever way to poke fun at humankind.

Regardless, because of his ability to play the piano and sing, he pulled off an intriguing and memorable show.

His attention to detail, down to his lighting choices, helped to create superb atmosphere. Look for Dane Terry at his upcoming show in Bushwick, NY at HoLo on September 30.
