Matrika Hay displayed her surprising voice and big dreams, accompanied by singer friends and the proficient Evan Alparone on the piano. While keeping the atmosphere light and fun, Hay shared her stories of not quite making the cut and longing for more.

Despite her small stature, she stood out among her guests with her range and ability to hold lengthy notes.

She stunned, not only in her black dress, but when harmonizing with Rebecca Ruttle on “Waiting for Life” (Once on This Island) and in a fantastic duet with Brian Levario on the comedic “The Song That Goes Like This” (Spamalot). I’d like to hear her perform more duets, because I felt like it added a feeling of depth to her voice. The duet was performed well, but it didn’t match the character of other songs which were in some way about chasing dreams, such as Hay’s solid performance of “Astonishing”(Little Women). Additionally, Emily Bailey chose the fun song, “What Baking Can Do” (Waitress), and Alex Hajjar belted “Out There” (The Hunchback of Notre Dame). I enjoyed their selections, but I was more impressed by Levario’s “Boy with Dreams” (Edges), and even more so by Ruttle’s “Home” (The Wiz). The quintet ended on a high note performing “Next Time”/”I Wouldn’t Go Back” (Closer Than Ever). I’m looking forward to seeing what Matrika Hay has up next.
