Antonia Bennett has a very pleasant sound, a unique style, excellent phrasing, and the ability to hold a note when it is called for. Her current show at the Café Carlyle has a song list that has been exquisitely chosen from the very best of the Great American Songbook.

Her pleasant demeanor and her subtle sense of humor produced smiles and an occasional chuckle from the audience.

She is backed by a delightful jazz trio—Spike Wilner (piano), Paul Newinsky (bass), and Anthony Pinciotti (drums)—that works beautifully with her style and sound.

Bennett opened with “Teach Me Tonight” followed by an up-tempo “Fascinating Rhythm.” A jazzy “Pennies from Heaven” preceded a very warm “Embraceable You.” “Nice Work If You Can Get It” included a solo by Newinsky that drew cheers from the audience. She gave pianist Wilner an opportunity to do a solo number and he took advantage nicely with “Tea for Two. As we are celebrating Ella Fitzgerald’s centennial this year, Bennett sang a medley of love songs associated with Ella.

After saying that it was her favorite Cole Porter song, Bennett did justice to “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye.” As a girl, she traveled with her dad (Tony Bennett) and Rosemary Clooney when they toured together. Her warm remembrances of Clooney led into her best number of the evening, “Love Is Here to Stay,” which showed off her vocal control and ability to hold a final note. Bennett closed with a powerfully up-tempo “From This Moment On,” followed by her soft and sweet encore, “Always on My Mind.”

(This engagement continues through June 3.)
