The ’80s & ’90s were an amazing two decades for the piano bar scene in New York City. When Erv Raible and Rob Hoskins purchased The Duplex in the late ’70s, they created a very special place that fostered an incredible team of talent, becoming a second home for those who worked there. As the piano bar scene and businesses grew, they added Brandy’s (1980) and Don’t Tell Mama (1982) to the circuit, expanding & revitalizing a genre that had been waning in the years following the disco rage, when mirror balls ruled the night.

The Five Oaks, Arthur’s Tavern and Marie’s Crisis, along with the original Duplex at 55 Grove Street, made that block a destination for all who were seeking live piano bar entertainment. With the opening of Waverly in 1981 &88’s in 1988, the scene expanded. Broadway Baby on the Upper West Side and Judys* in Midtown expanded the scene, with people going from one piano bar to another during the course of an evening, visiting with friends & catching great night of entertainment.
