Judy-Rossignuolo-Rice-Denise-McGowan-Tracy-Cabaret-Scenes-Magazine_212When Harry Met Irving, featuring two popular Chicago entertainers—namely Judy Rossignuolo-Rice and Denise McGowan Tracy—was a pleasant program of mostly uptempo numbers by Harold Arlen (nope, not Harry Warren) and Irving Berlin. The pair had fun dancing a comic minuet on Berlin’s “A Couple of Swells” clad in baggy trousers and patches. McGowan Tracy is best known as the funny, smartass host of Monday Night Live at Petterino’s and explained how singing ballads is not her usual choice. That said, her offering of “The Man That Got Away” (Arlen/Ira Gershwin) was a strong moment in the show as McGowan, knowing better than to channel Judy, found her own wistful journey.

simply delivered and not oversung.

The Wizard of Oz devotee and musical theater veteran Rossignuolo-Rice saluted Arlen well with “Over the Rainbow” (words by E.Y. Harburg). Of course, “God Bless America” was the right selection to close with. While the sold-out audience left entertained, we also wanted to know more about the singers’ personal connections to the songwriters and to the songs.  Beckie Menzie behind the piano gave the ladies  the right amount of octane.
