Tell us about Robin’s Nest.
Robin’s Nest is a cabaret benefit series with the purpose of supporting Helpusadopt.org. Robin’s Nest began with an idea which first came from Eric Michael Gillett, who suggested that I host a series and call it Robin’s Nest. At the time, I decided that I would do something for a charity, but I was not yet sure of which one.

As an adoptive mother of two, I am particularly sensitive to others who are going through the adoption process and, subsequently, was told about Helpusadopt.org from friends in the cabaret community. I knew that I had to find out more.

How did you get involved with Helpusadopt.

org?
My husband and I researched Helpusadopt.org and met with Becky Snyder Fawcett, the founder and executive director of the organization. We were extremely impressed with both the mission and the platform of the organization and together made the decision that this would indeed be the beneficiary of Robin’s Nest. The first benefit was held at the Laurie Beechman Theatre on June 9, 2014 and was a terrific event. As of this fall, I have joined the board of directors of Helpusadopt.org.

What is the mission of Helpusadopt.org?
The mission of Helpusadopt.org is to help create families through adoption by awarding grants to qualified couples and individuals to assist with the frequently prohibitive costs of adoption. The platform of Helpusadopt.org is that family is family and grant money is awarded to heterosexual and LGBT couples, as well as individuals, without discrimination.

What was the impetus for the benefits?
I wanted to help spread the word to the cabaret community that this amazing organization exists and offer the community both the opportunity to support it and to partake in its offerings.

How did you get involved with Eric Michael Gillett?
I have been studying voice with him for several years and he has directed both of my solo cabaret shows.

Since I am a speech pathologist, we have collaborated on a professional basis as our work can often overlap. Through our work together, we have also supported each other in various projects.

Tell us about the November 17th Benefit.
This will be the second Robin’s Nest. It is directed by Eric Michael Gillett and features Hilary Kole. I will be hosting and Eric Michael and I will also be performing. In addition, I have amassed a hand-selected cast of performers with very specific connections to adoption, as well as some performers I have met along the way who I felt had something to offer to the evening. The evening will include singing as well as the opportunity to hear some of the performers share their personal stories. In addition, there will be an opportunity to learn about Helpusadopt.

What has Robin’s Nest meant to you?
Robin’s Nest has afforded me the opportunity to bring my journey full circle. My children are grown and, if not for adoption, my husband and I would never have had the opportunity to experience parenthood. With Robin’s Nest and Helpusadopt.org, I can help others to create families, regardless of their sexual orientation. And I can do it one song at a time.
