Meg-Mackay-Billy-Philadelphia-Cabaret-Scenes-Magazine_212This darling couple established themselves in San Francisco with countless years of benefits, charity events and cabaret shows. Billy would be accompanying various local performers, while Meg could be seen in a number of musical theater productions. Similar to another revered Bay Area musical couple, Wesla Whitfield and husband Mike Greensill, Meg and Billy specialize in lost gems culled from the Great American Songbook and movie musicals.

Meg shines best on comic material, delivering well-written bon mots in her husky alto. Irving Berlin’s “You’d Be Surprised,” a saucy hit in 1919, stills can elicit a chuckle. Billy and Meg duet on Sondheim’s smart look at what makes marriage tick in “The Little Things You Do Together” from Company. The same comic appeal works for Murray Grand’s sardonic testament to aging, “Too Old to Die Young.”

Mackay and Philadelphia cover the great songwriters with smart lyrics and great melodies that remind us of a great musical past.
