Until It’s Gone Forever, You Don’t Really Appreciate It. Cherish Every Moment…

En Avant! In ballet, that means movement or the execution of a step. I think that is the appropriate way for me to begin the first of many columns for YOU, the cabaret audience and entertainer.

Richard Skipper here and I am thrilled to be writing my first “blog” for Cabaret Scenes’ new website. That is the last time I will be referring to it as a “blog”. I am going to try to write something on a regular basis based, of course, upon my own schedule. I am thrilled to be joining Scott Barbarino, Frank Dain, Peter Leavy, and all the other artists and writers who will help to make this site a viable tool in continuing to celebrate cabaret. That, of course, includes YOU.

I already know that many of you reading this are familiar with me and my work. However, my ego is not so large not to also recognize that for everyone one of you who knows who I am, there are an equal number of you who don’t.

At least, I truly hope that IS the case. How wonderful to believe that I am possibly reaching out to a whole new audience who are meeting me for the first time! Let me share my passion for the genre of “cabaret” and what it means to me.

My goal with this column is to celebrate ALL that cabaret is: its past, present, and, more importantly, its future. THAT is a big reason why I am excited to be here at the launch of this next stage of Cabaret Scenes. I believe that its original creator and founder, Darrell Henline, is smiling down on this new and exhilarating direction. I was lucky enough to know him and I can actually feel his pride.

It takes a lot to be a great entertainer. I don’t like to use the word performer. A trained seal is a performer. It knows what it must do to get its reward, a fish. It PERFORMS and goes through the paces of what it must do with little regard for how the audience is truly reacting to its antics. When I am on stage, I am first and foremost an artist. As an entertainer, my first focus is on the audience. I like to believe that most people in cabaret on any side of the footlights share in that vision.

One platform that I am passionate about is audience development. It is exciting to be part of an audience sitting in a packed room, sharing the experience with others who may or not share the same reactions as have I. As a writer, I am sitting in solitude transferring my thoughts to paper. Still, I am not a loner and I write for you, my audience. I seek and welcome your feedback. I want to know your needs and to be the conduit to communicate YOUR experiences in this great genre to others who cherish it also.

As you read this, my first column, I will be sitting by the pool in Malibu, reenergizing myself for what already looks like an exciting autumn in New York, anticipating new shows, returning shows, a new season with MAC (the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs), the Cabaret Convention, AND this exciting new direction of Cabaret Scenes.

Please let me have your comments and/or suggestions as to what you would like to see in this column as I move ahead!

En Avant!
