Amanda McBroom visited Chicago, serving on the teaching team for a master class. Her show, Let’s Fall in Love IS a master class in cabaret. McBroom connected beautifully with the Chicago crowd, telling of repeatedly overindulging in “flaming cheese” in Chicago’s Greektown. Her lower register is mature and sensual while the upper is sometimes operatic and sometimes delicate and fragile. The mature and sensual is best demonstrated in “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.

Over the years I have heard audiences collectively sigh following McBroom’s tender, vulnerable delivery of “Erroll Flynn.” Written about her “father, the actor” by Mc Broom and Gordon Hunt, it is the essential story song, blending seemingly prosaic detail with discovery and deeply rooted insights. That Davenport’s misty-eyed audience sigh surprised nobody. Beckie Menzie’s accompaniment was responsive, lean and just right.
